Manifesto of MVA Energy

Our Vision for a Balanced and Clean Energy Future

About Us

MVA Energy

At MVA Energy, we believe in a sustainable and stable energy future for everyone. The rapid emergence of renewable energy sources like solar and wind is a crucial step in this direction, but it also brings new challenges for the stability of our energy grid. Intermittent renewable energy generation, combined with the reduction of flexible gas power plants, makes the provision of constant electricity and maintenance of grid stability an urgent issue. This is where MVA Energy can make a difference by investing in the size-able energy infrastructure assets that are required to enable a renewable electricity system.

Our Mission

Stability and Sustainability through Battery Energy Storage

At MVA Energy, we develop, build, own, and operate utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to drive the energy transition. Battery storage is essential for a carbon-free and reliable energy grid in Belgium, as it can store excess renewable energy generated now for later use when it is required to meet peak system demands. MVA Energy strives to operate in accordance with the highest governance standards, involving all interested stakeholders, namely regulatory, municipal, and environmental authorities. We address the core challenges of a greener energy supply, with benefits that extend beyond just the grid:

Balancing Supply and Demand

Renewable energy sources are inherently weather-dependent and therefore difficult to predict and manage. BESS enable us to store surplus energy during peak production (e.g., sunny or windy days) and release it during periods of high demand or low production. This ensures a more stable and reliable energy supply and facilitates the integration of more renewable energy into the grid.

Benefits for the Region where the BESS is built
The presence of a battery storage system on the local electricity grid ensures that local consumers are physically supplied with more green, local energy. BESS can alleviate congestion by storing surplus energy and releasing it when the electricity grid is under less strain. Furthermore, BESS contributes to voltage stability in the region and plays an important role in reducing carbon emissions and supporting sustainable energy practices.
Facilitating Renewable Energy Integration
By storing energy generated when the sun shines or the wind blows, BESS optimises the use of clean energy and reduces the need for fossil fuel backup. This is essential as the installed solar and wind capacity in Belgium is expected to increase significantly in the coming years. Furthermore, battery storage enables the decarbonisation of the energy system by storing surplus renewable energy, thereby reducing reliance on fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions. Ultimately, we believe utility scale BESS will enable an almost entirely ‘Net Zero’ grid to be operated, with the lower cost and sustainability benefits of de-carbonised electricity production emerging as Belgium electrifies other parts of its economy, such as transportation and industrial demand.
Managing Peak Demand

Electricity demand peaks at certain times of the day, mainly in the evenings. BESS can provide additional energy during these peak periods, reducing pressure on the grid and potentially eliminating the need for expensive and polluting gas and oil-fired peaking power plants. Economically it makes much more sense to use excess renewable electricity by ‘shifting’ it in the peak demand period, than wasting that green energy and having to use fossil fuel power generation instead.

Stabilising Energy Prices

Energy prices fluctuate due to variations in renewable energy supply and increasing demand. BESS can store electricity when prices are low and sell it back to the grid when prices are high, which helps to stabilise energy prices for consumers.

Maintaining Frequency and Voltage
With a growing share of renewable energy in the system, grid frequency and voltage become more volatile. BESS helps maintain these essential parameters and can provide local ‘overload’ services, which traditional fossil fuel power plants and nuclear power plants used to provide, but solar and wind farms cannot. Battery storage improves the reliability of the energy grid by rapidly responding to fluctuations in electricity supply and demand, electrical frequency and voltage.
Ancillary Network Services
BESS provides crucial ancillary services such as frequency regulation and voltage support. These services help maintain grid stability and reliability, which is essential to prevent blackouts and ensure the overall health of the energy infrastructure.
Energy Independence and Security
A local energy storage solution like BESS can enhance energy security by reducing reliance on energy imports and mitigating the impact of potential disruptions in the wider energy supply chain.

Our Commitment to
the Community and the Environment

At MVA Energy, we are also committed to minimising our environmental footprint and ensuring the safety of our operations. Our BESS facilities are designed with attention to:

  • Rainwater infiltration (site constructed with gravel).
  • Minimal visual intrusion.
  • No nitrogen deposition.
  • No impact on local mobility or air quality.
  • Minimal noise pollution.
  • Meeting the highest standards for fire safety.

MVA Energy is the partner for a resilient, efficient, and sustainable energy network. We are building the future of green energy, today.
